A Between the Keys "Mixtape" on August 28th

Most episodes of the ASCAP Deems Taylor Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys center around a particular topic, or feature a specific performer, composer, genre or special guest.

This week, however,  the Classical Network's Artist-In Residence Jed Distler couldn't come up with an idea. So what to do?

"Whenever I get stuck like this, I simply go into 'Mixtape Mode' ," Distler explains. "I just pick CDs at random, fire up my music hard drive, and pray! I'll start with one selection, and as I'm listening, I either think about what other piece of music this selection suggests, or I'll go the opposite route, where the subsequent selection will be outlandishly different. For example, who in their right mind would go from a Bach Partita movement directly into Morton Subotnick? Or a John Musto rag into the Scherzo from the Shostakovich Piano Quintet?"

Other featured selections will include Glenn Gould in Hindemith, Mirian Conti playing Ernest Bloch and Morton Gould, the legendary Madgda Tagliaferro's Chopin, Ravel with the Abegg Trio, a Mozart Sonata with violinist Arthur Grumiaux and pianist Clara Haskil, plus Bill Evans multitracked on two pianos.

In short, you can expect a wealth of contrasts and surprises on Between the Keys, this Tuesday, August 28th at 10:00 PM.
