The Sunday Opera: Jake Heggie's "Moby Dick" from LA Opera On Air

We’ll be going “down to the sea in ships” on this week’s Sunday Opera (10/21 3:00 p.m.) with an encore production of Jake Heggie’s version of “Moby Dick.”  Jay Hunter Morris leads the cast as Captain Ahab, and he’s joined by Joshua Guerrero as the Greenhorn (Ishmael), Morgan Smith as Starbuck, Musa Ngqungwana as Queequeg, and Jacqueline Ehols as Pip.  The performance features James Conlon leading the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra.

Stay tuned for more music of the sea when host Michael Kownacky presents a piece by Belgian composer Paul Gilson entitled “De zee” that is purported by some to have prompted Debussy to write “La mer.”  Also included will be Sir Granville Bantock’s Hebridean Symphony which is one of his “Celtic works” and was based on life on the islands that lay west of Scotland and the surrounding waters including the Hebridean Sea, The Minch, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Michael is program host and host of the WWFM Sunday Opera, Sundays at 3 pm, and co-host of The Dress Circle, Sundays at 7 pm.
