The Sunday Opera: Verdi's "Falstaff" from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra

Giuseppe Verdi’s last opera, “Falstaff,” in a concert performance from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra will air on this week’s Sunday Opera (10/29  3:00 p.m.).  The lustful Sir John will be performed by Falstaff specialist, Ambrogio Maestri.  Joining him are Eleanora Buratto and Laura Polverelli as the objects of his attention, Alice and Meg, Luca Salsi as Alice’s husband, Rosa Feola as their daughter Nanetta, and Saimir Pirgu as her love, Fenton.  Rounding out the cast are Daniela Barcellona as the cunning Mistress Quickly, Saveria Fiore as Dr. Caius, and Anicio Zorzi Giustiniani and Luca Dall’Amico as the comic Bardolph and Pistol.  “Falstaff” is conducted by Riccardo Muti.  Stay tuned after the opera when host Michael Kownacky is offering Gustav Mahler’s enigmatic Symphony No. 7 in E minor which seems to depict a wanderer’s journey through a spooky woods in a stunning performance by the New York Philharmonic conducted by Leonard Bernstein.

Michael is program host and host of the WWFM Sunday Opera, Sundays at 3 pm, and co-host of The Dress Circle, Sundays at 7 pm.
