What Makes It Great with Rob Kapilow

The Classical Network's monthly broadcast of the popular, sold-out concert series from Merkin Concert Hall at the Kaufman Music Center in New York City. Composer, conductor, author and music commentator Rob Kapilow, through demonstration and discussion, presents a work or group of works by a well-known composer and shows us what makes this music great. This demonstration is followed by a complete performance of the work followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

This week's Friday Night (7/6) concert brings another performance ‘What Makes It Great’ with host composer, conductor, author and commentator Rob Kapilow. In this week's program, Kapilow turns his attention to the music of George Gershwin. This concert was recorded at the home of WMIG, Merkin Concert Hall at the Kaufman Music Center in New York City. Join composer, conductor, author and commentator Rob Kapilow as he hosts another "What Makes it Great" this Friday and Saturday (5/4 and 5/5), this time focusing on Antonín Dvořák's Symphony No. 8 in G Major and performed by The Manhattan School of Music Chamber Sinfonia. 

Join The Classical Network Friday (3/9) at 8 pm for the next episode of "What Makes It Great" hosted by conductor, author and commentator Rob Kapilow. On this month's program, Kapilow will be conducting his special guest ensemble The Manhattan School of Music Chamber Sinfonia and as he explores the final symphony of Franz Joseph Haydn, the Symphony No. 104 in D Major "London."

What Makes it Great with Rob Kapilow returns this Friday (2/2) at 8 pm as he focuses on one of Beethoven's last works, his Quartet No. 16, Op. 135. The Harlem Quartet will join Kapilow as he discusses what makes this work great, followed by a performance and a Q & A session.

This Friday  and Saturday, What Makes it Great with Rob Kapilow returns for its new season on The Classical Network with a program dedicated to the music of George Gershwin. Our Friday night concert program features the encore presentation of What Makes it Great with Rob Kapilow, who is joined by select young musicians from area youth orchestras - Youth Orchestra of Central Jersey, Greater Princeton Youth Orchestra, Youth Orchestra of Bucks County and Princeton High School Orchestra. Kapilow explores Schubert's Symphony No. 8 in B minor, "Unfinished," with a full performance of the work in the second part of the broadcast. Tune in at 8 pm.

Join The Classical Network for our next live concert broadcast featuring composer, conductor, author and commentator Rob Kapilow on Monday, May 8 at 8 pm live at Princeton High School, or on the air as our Celebrating Our Musical Future broadcast. Select young musicians from three area youth orchestras - Youth Orchestra of Central New Jersey, Greater Princeton Youth Orchestra and Youth Orchestra of Bucks County - will come together to form an All-Area All-Star Youth Orchestra to perform Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 in B minor, “Unfinished."

April is Jazz Appreciation Month, and on this month's broadcast of What Makes it Great (Friday at 8 pm), host composer, conductor, author and commentator Rob Kapilow explores the music of Duke Ellington. Joining Rob will be the Kyle Athayde Dance Party Big Band. This concert was recorded earlier this month at the home of What Makes it Great, Merkin Concert Hall at the Kaufman Music Center in New York City.
