School Mission

The mission of the American Boychoir is to sustain and move forward with a distinctively American voice the one-thousand-year-old Boychoir school tradition. The American Boychoir is committed to being the finest choir of its kind in the nation and among the finest in the world. The American Boychoir achieves this each year by recruiting and training talented choristers from across the country to create a truly national choir.

It is a testimony to the vision of the institution's founder, Herbert Huffman, that after 62 years the objectives stated in the School's original charter are as apt today as they were then.

  1. To build character in young boys and prepare them for good citizenship.
  2. To provide an exceptional training program for musically talented boys, regardless of their religion, social background or financial circumstances.
  3. To make this unique opportunity the motivation for general educational attainment.
  4. To help enrich the cultural life of the nation and to produce a musical organization that is recognized throughout the country as the finest of its kind.
As stewards of the American Boychoir School, Board, Faculty and Staff affirm these objectives.

Short History

The American Boychoir -A HISTORY OF EXCELLENCE
Celebrating 75 years of artistic and academic excellence in 2012-2013, The American BoychoirSchool (ABS), a fully accredited boarding school for 4th through 8th grade boys, combines thetraining program for mastery of the thousand-year-old Boychoir tradition of choral music with a superior academic program. Our integrated educational experience promotes creativity and such traditional values as self-discipline, self-reliance, hard work, teamwork, and dedication to long-term goals. The Boychoir, founded in Columbus, Ohio, has been a leader in choral music as a world-class performing ensemble since 1937. In 1950 the school relocated to Albemarle, the estate of Gerard Lambert, in Princeton, New Jersey, in order to be closer to the New York and Philadelphia performing arts marketplace.

Maintaining an active national and international touring schedule that features over 120 concerts annually, ABS performs regularly with world-class ensembles including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Concertgebouw Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, and The New York Philharmonic; appears as featured artists with James Levine and Michael Tilson Thomas at the Tanglewood Music Festival, and has performed with renowned soprano Jessye Norman, prominent jazz musician Wynton Marsalis, legendary musician and composer, Sir Paul McCartney, and for several U. S. Presidents. The American Boychoir has been featured on the nationally televised Oscar Awards ceremony with pop diva Beyoncé, and is heard on national radio, and on over 50 commercial recordings including those on its own label-- Albemarle Records.

In addition to a demanding touring schedule, The American Boychoir School boasts a rigorous academic program that includes math, science, languages, and a world-class music training program of music theory, keyboard instruction, and private voice lessons. ABS graduates are recruited by the nation's most selective boarding schools, and those who return to public schools are regularly placed in advanced courses.

Testimonials

"We chose to perform Beethoven's Ninth Symphony on Millennial New Year's Eve as a kind of prayer for peace and brotherhood in the years to come. This performance was filled with a very special emotion for everyone. Not only did The American Boychoir contribute artistically, with beautiful tone and intonation, but the boys' youthful joy and energy embodied Beethoven's great masterwork in a most wonderful way."
~Kurt Masur, Former Music Director, New York Philharmonic

"It was a pleasure working with The American Boychoir on both Christmastide and Christmas Symphony. I'm proud of my association with these young men, and the lovely music we made together."
       ~Jessye Norman, Mezzo-Soprano, Metropolitan Opera

"The American Boychoir is wonderful! Your talent, enhanced by hard work and training, combines to form one of the premier choirs in our great nation."
~Barbara Bush, Former First Lady of the United States

"…riveting involvement and full-bodied sound..."
       ~The New York Times

"...honey-toned singing...superlative..."
