Even after her marriage to Robert Schumann, Clara (Wieck) Schumann continued composing and performing. While her income from performing was crucial to her family's financial stability, she also continued because of the important role music played in her life. As she wrote to Robert several years before they married, "I wish to lead a life free from care, and I see that I shall be unhappy if I cannot always work at my art." A Tempo this Saturday (9/29) features a conversation with composer Victoria Bond, whose opera Clara will premiere next Spring, part of the music world's celebration of the 200th anniversary of Clara's birth.
Host Rachel Katz will speak with Bond about her devotion to music, how her relationships with her father, Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms influenced her life and choices, and her ability and desire to pursue a career in a time when few women had the means or opportunity to do so.
