A Tempo: Carnegie Hall's National Youth Orchestras Move Online For Music, Sharing

Since 2013, Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institue has gathered talented musicians from across the country on the campus of SUNY-Purchase during the summer to learn, share and perform as part of the National Youth Orchestra of the USA. It added in subsequent years a program for slightly younger musicians from communities and regions that traditionally have had less access to music programs, called NYO2, and a jazz ensemble, NYO Jazz. The campus this year is quiet, as concerns over Covid-19 forced the cancellation of any in-person events, but Carnegie Hall has moved the programs online. A Tempo host Rachel Katz this Saturday (7/18 at 7 pm) speaks with Doug Beck, Carnegie Hall's director of youth training programs, and Laura Futamura, a flutist from Middletown, NJ, who attended NYO2 and NYO-USA in the past.

Rachel Katz is the host of A Tempo which airs Saturdays at 7 pm.
