GatherNYC presents the Juilliard String Quartet, hailed by The Boston Globe as “the most important American quartet in history.” Founded in 1946, the ensemble draws on a deep and vital engagement to the classics, while embracing the mission of championing new works, a vibrant combination of the familiar and the daring. Each performance of the Juilliard String Quartet is a unique experience, bringing together the four members’ profound understanding, total commitment, and unceasing curiosity in sharing the wonders of the string quartet literature.
GatherNYC is a revolutionary concert experience founded in 2018 by cellist Laura Metcalf and guitarist Rupert Boyd. The 2023-24 season at the series’ home venue, Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in Columbus Circle, includes 16 concerts and runs from October 22, 2023 through May 26, 2024, with concerts held every other Sunday at 11am in The Theater at MAD.
Guests at GatherNYC are served exquisite live classical music performed by New York’s immensely talented artists, artisanal coffee and pastries, a taste of spoken word, and a brief celebration of silence. The entire experience lasts one hour and evokes the community and spiritual nourishment of a religious service – but the religion is music, and all are welcome. Coffee and pastries are served before each performance at 10:30am.

This exciting program features an excerpt from a crown jewel of the classical ballet repertoire, Swan Lake Act II, followed by a recently choreographed contemporary piece, VARIANTS, from Artistic Director Ethan Stiefel.
Swan Lake Act II takes audiences into the bewitching world of Odette, the swan princess, as she reveals her true form to Prince Siegfried. From the famous “Dance of the Cygnets” to the poignant and romantic pas de deux between Odette and the prince, this fairytale scene will leave audiences spellbound.
Ethan Stiefel’s VARIANTS is set to Brahms’ “Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Op. 24.” Both the music and choreography consist of a set of twenty-five variations and a concluding fugue. VARIANTS is made possible by the generous support of The Ted & Mary Jo Shen Charitable Gift Fund.

Dubbed by The New Yorker as a "cello goddess," Maya Beiser creates radical works for the cello, reimagining her instrument's boundaries with her iconoclastic performances and recordings.
On her new album, out on April 5, Maya recreates Terry Riley’s In C as a series of ever-evolving cello loops. Enveloped by live drumming by Shane Shanahan and Matt Kilmer, Maya constructs a hypnotic, rapturous soundscape that re-envisions this classic 1964 Minimalist masterpiece, marking its 60th anniversary.
Her performance at National Sawdust incorporates spatial sound designed specifically for the venue’s immersive Meyer Constellation system.
This concert is presented in collaboration with State Theatre New Jersey.
