Between the Keys’ Annual Scarlatti Holiday Feast December 18th

This week’s edition of the ASCAP Deems Taylor Virgil Thomson Award winning Between the Keys celebrates what has become an annual tradition for the show’s host and producer, the Classical Network’s Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler.

“Each year at holiday time I devote an entire program to the genius of Domenico Scarlatti,” Jed says. “I do so for a reason. Comes Christmastime,  you have a gazillion performances of Handel’s Messiah. You have a Bach marathon on another radio station. So if Handel and Bach get this attention, why not the other great Baroque master born that same year, in 1685? Besides, Scarlatti’s 555-plus Sonatas represent a crucial and delightful part of the keyboard repertory. They have so much variety and character, and lots of unpredictable touches. And think of the enormous wealth of Scarlatti performances on disc.”

For this year's Scarlatti feast, Jed focuses on sonatas not heard on previous editions along with works inspired by Scarlatti by Norman Dello Joio, Raymond Lewenthal and recent Between the Keys guest Marc-André Hamelin. Featured performers include Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, Vladimir Horowitz, Carlo Grante, Debra Torok, Claire Huangci, Dejan Lazic, Yuja Wang, Raymond Lewenthal, Sonia Rubinsky, Ilona Eibenschutz, Dubravka Tomšič, Wanda Landowska, Emil Gilels, Marc-André Hamelin, Wendy Carlos and Alberto Reyes.

Join Jed Distler for Between the Keys on Tuesday December 18th at 10 PM, only here on The Classical Network and WWFM.org.
