A Between the Keys Double Header on July 7th

Baseball may have been in limbo during the lockdown, yet we’ve got a veritable “double header” for this week’s episode of the ASCAP Deems Taylor Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys.

“I’ve been wanting to devote an entire program to a couple of large-scale and utterly disparate works for piano and orchestra,” says Jed Distler, the Classical Network’s Artist-in-Residence and the writer, producer and host of Between the Keys.  “So I came up with a wild pairing that probably hasn’t been done before.”

Paul Hindemith’s brashly baroque-ish Kammermusik No. 2 begins the program, with a rare yet unusually vibrant recording featuring Ensemble 13 Baden-Baden and pianist Maria Bergmann. An fascinating live encounter from 1957 between conductor Antal Dorati and the legendary composer/pianist Ernest von Dohnanyi follows. “This performance of the Mozart Piano Concerto in C Major K. 503 is quite unusual,” says Distler. Dohnanyi is a big-hearted Romantic, while Dorati is more of a classicist. Somehow their disparate styles fuse, and sparks really do fly here. The Minnesota Orchestra released this recording in a special box set that’s long been out of print, so I thought it would be nice to share this treasure with my listeners.”

Tune in Tuesday at 10:00 PM for a stimulating Between the Keys episode, only here on The Classical Network and WWFM.org
