It’s time for songs from four more musicals with which you might not be that familiar on this week’s Dress Circle (5/16 7:00 p.m.). We’ll begin with once extremely popular operetta by Oscar Straus entitled “The Chocolate Soldier” which appeared on Broadway seven times but has been virtually unheard from since its last revival in 1947. Irving Berlin’s “Miss Liberty” is up next. This fantasy about a reporter in Paris trying to find the true model for the Statue of Liberty played for over 300 performances but has never been revived on Broadway. The third show, "Songbook," played in London for over 200 performances but for only one on Broadway where it was renamed “The Mooney Shapiro Songbook.” Based on the life of a fictional composer, it follows him throughout his career as he changes styles to try to stay relevant. We’ll close with an off-Broadway musical that we love a great deal entitled “The Spitfire Grill” which is based on the film of the same name. Starting life at New Brunswick’s George Street Playhouse, the show had a successful off-Broadway run and has been staged over 700 times around the world but is still relatively unknown by many.
