Kicking off the new year on Between the Keys, January 5th and 6th

The Classical Network’s Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler rings in 2021 with an eclectic playlist on his ASCAP Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys.

How do such playlists evolve?

“I usually start by randomly searching through my music collection ,” Distler explains. “For example, Jerome Lowenthal’s long-out-of-print CD devoted to music of Christian Sinding happened to fall from a shelf.  I hadn’t heard it in years, and I had forgotten just how brilliantly Jerry played that composer’s B Minor Piano Sonata, especially that scintillating finale. So then and there I decided that we’d end the show with that piece.”

“From Jerry’s Sinding recording I basically worked my way backwards.  There’s a segment of pieces that are waltzes or waltz-like, there are two oddball pairings where   I first juxtapose Gurdjieff with Schumann, and then Gurdjieff with Beethoven: very strange, but it kind of works!.”

Other featured composers include Valentin Silvestrov, Reynaldo Hahn, Carl Maria von Weber, Biagio Putignano, Lou Harrison and Tom Constanten.

Tune in this Tuesday January 5th at 10 PM for Between the Keys, with a rebroadcast Wednesday January 6th at noon, exclusively on The Classical Network and WWFM.org.
