New Piano Releases on Between the Keys, September 24th

For this week’s edition of the ASCAP Deems Taylor Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys, the Classical Network’s Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler has put together a program of new piano releases.

“With so many new CDs and downloads flooding the market, I sometimes have to stand back, take a deep breath, and calmly peruse such abundance of riches,” says Distler. “What I’m going to feature on this episode is just the tip of a gargantuan new release iceberg, yet I wanted to draw attention to some new, newish and upcoming piano CDs that have caught my ear. I admit that I’ve reviewed a couple of them already, and I also wrote the notes for the big box set I feature that’s devoted to Vladimir Horowitz  run-throughs and rehearsals. And I shamelessly promote my OWN new release, ‘Fearless Monk,’ which is finally out on the market and available.” Among new releases featured include those by pianists Martino Tirimo, Stanislaw Khristenko, Wei Luo, Dzmitry Ulasiuk, Roberta Rust, Kathleen Supové, Andrew Tyson, and the Ancelle/Berlinskaya Piano Duo.

Distler also showcases the first CD release of a recording he considers quite important. “In 1965, the late Estonian pianist Kabi Laretei recorded Hindemith’s keyboard magnum opus Ludus Tonalis. It’s an amazing performance of an underrated and undervalued masterpiece. For decades I’ve pushed for this recording’s reissue, which now has come to pass.”

Tune in Tuesday at 10 PM for Between the Keys, an exclusive production of The Classical Network and WWFM.org
