Obscure Sonatas on Between the Keys April 14th

This week on the ASCAP Deems Taylor Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys, the Classical Network’s Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler presents Episode 251: Sonata Obscura.

“Hunting through my collection for obscure yet worthy piano sonatas, I discovered a lot of interesting goodies that make for a wide-ranging, highly contrasted and hopefully stimulating program,” says Distler. And in my research, I found recordings by a few pianists who may not be so well known, yet similarly deserve our attention. For example, I’d never heard of Zdenek Hnat. Who has? Yet he made a fabulous recording of Dussek’s “L’invocation” Sonata on LP, and I found a digital transfer to share. Or the British pianist Frank Merrick, who was one of the first in the 20th century to champion the music of John Field. And so on.”

Distler showcases works by Field, Dussek, Tippett, Glazunov, Prokofiev, Persichetti, York Bowen, and even himself. “Yes, I’ve written obscure sonatas too, and why not indulge in shameless self-promotion?”

Tune in Tuesday at 10:00 PM for Between the Keys, an exclusive production of The Classical Network and WWFM.org.
