Play “Dare to Compare” on Between the Keys, June 18th

Comparing pianists performing the same work is one of Jed Distler’s favorite things to do on his ASCAP Deems Taylor Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys. So he’ll devote this week’s episode to a full round of a game he calls “Dare to Compare.”

“To be honest, I inherited the comparison bug from my great friend and fellow Classical Network host David Dubal,” says Distler. “Years ago when I first heard David on the radio, he was comparing Beethoven sonata movements, showing how Arthur Rubinstein and Daniel Barenboim approached the same music so differently. I had never thought about interpretive differences or commonalities between pianists before. It was an epiphany, a life-changing moment for me as both a musician and a listener.”

Among the comparisons that Distler will offer on this week’s program include Rosalyn Tureck, András Schiff and Anne-Marie-McDermott in the Gigue from Bach’s Partita No. 1, Robert Casadesus and Vladimir Horowitz playing Fauré, Peter Hill and Pierre-Laurent Aimard in a Prelude by Messiaen, and a three-way comparison between Radu Lupu, David Fray and Alfred Brendel in Schubert’s F Minor Moment Musical.

Tune in Tuesday June 18th at 10 PM for Between the Keys, hosted by The Classical Network’s Artist-in-Residence Jed DIstler. This program is proudly sponsored by Jacobs Music Company, and is an exclusive production of The Classical Network and WWFM.org
