On a Positive Note: Taking the Classical Revolution Online

Harpist Anna Maria Mendietta in San Francisco, CA.

When musicians involved in Classical Revolution, created in 2006 to bring chamber music to cafes and other non-traditional venues, found themselves stranded at home by shelter-in-place rules following the Coronavirus outbreak, Founder Charith Premawardhana realized these musicians could come together as a resource to help keep the music playing. The result is a weekly Live Online Music Festivalfeaturing musicians from various towns and cities performing short works from their homes, and hoping for some monetary tips to help tide them as they deal with the loss of regular performance opportunities.

Trina and Arun Ramamurthy perform from their home in Brooklyn.

Since its founding in 2006, Classical Revolution has expanded beyond the Bay area to Los Angeles, Colorado, Chicago, Baltimore and more. Premawardhana talks about the music festival on this episode of On A Positive Note.

Brook and Brendan Speltz, of the Escher String Quartet, and Milena Parajo-van de Stadt of the Dover Quartet, perform for Classical Revolution from Philadelphia.
Classical Revolution Founder Charith Premawardhana's mother, Dhilanthi Fernando, took part in the festival, performing a Rachmaninov work from her home in Chicago.

Rachel Katz is the host of A Tempo which airs Saturdays at 7 pm.
