The Sunday Opera: Verdi's "Aida" from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra

A concert version of Verdi’s “Aida” from June of 2019 presented by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra is the performance on this week’s Sunday Opera (9/6 3:00 p.m.)   This beloved story of forbidden love and sacrifice features Krassimira Stoyanova as Aida and Frencesco Meli as her Radames.   Anita Rachvelishvili is the vengeful Amneris, Kiril Manolov is Amonasro, and the High Priest Ramfis is sung by Ildar Abdrazakov.   Ricardo Muti conducts the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.

Join Michael Kownacky after the opera for a pleasant afternoon of orchestral music featuring two works by Erich Wolfgang Korngold.  We’ll begin with his moving Symphony in F Sharp in a performance by the Philadelphia Orchestra with Franz Weiser-Most conducting before we turn to his charming Violin Concerto in D which he constructed from themes found in several of his well-loved film scores.  The violin soloist in this performance is Ulf Hoelscher, and he’s joined by the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Willy Mattes.

Michael is program host and host of the WWFM Sunday Opera, Sundays at 3 pm, and co-host of The Dress Circle, Sundays at 7 pm.
