A Tempo: Summer Musical Institutions Prepare for Virtual Seasons

As the summer season approached, it became clear to classical music's iconic summer institutions that stay-at-home rules and restrictions on large gatherings were not going to be lifted in time for their regular programs to go on as usual. This past week, the BBC Proms announced eight weeks of archival performances that would be shared only via the Internet, radio and television, with a limited number of live performances tentatively scheduled for the end of August, with further details to come. Tanglewood will be sharing both archival and some newly produced solo or small group performances online, as well as a series of educational programs through its Tanglewood Learning Center, which launched last year. And Interlochen Center for the Arts, a highlight of many young artists' early musical experiences, is bringing its summer program online, including "Camp-in-a-Box" packages that will be mailed to participants.

A Tempo this Saturday (5/30 at 7 pm) will look at how Tanglewood and Interlochen are working to provide rich and meaningful experiences for those who have made them a part of their summer musical plans. Host Rachel Katz will speak with Tanglewood Director Tony Fogg and Interlochen President Trey Devey.

Interlochen will provide its arts and music instruction, as well as some of its summer camp traditions, to participants online this year.

Rachel Katz is the host of A Tempo which airs Saturdays at 7 pm.
