A Tempo: Westminster Students Mine "Anthracite Fields" for Musical, Local Meaning

Apr 15, 2017

As students at Westminster Choir College rehearse Julia Wolfe's Pulitzer Prize Winning oratorio Anthracite Fields, A Tempo recently looked at how the performance at the Roebling Wireworks brings together the work's exploration of life in Pennsylvania coal mining communities and the industrial history of cities like Trenton.

Host Rachel Katz speaks with Wolfe, conductor Joe Miller, director Doug Varone and historian Clifford Zink, as well as several of the students in the choir. She also chats with Matthew Shaftel, dean of Westminster College of the Arts at Rider University, about the educational component that is involving students in area schools.
