A Tempo: A Family's Migration Journey Through Music

A Tempo this Saturday (11-12 at 7 pm) features a conversation with composer Michael Gordon and The Crossing Choir conductor Donald Nally about the premiere of Gordon's Travel Guide to Nicaragua, based on his family's journey from Eastern Europe to Latin America to the U.S.

Composer Michael Gordon grew up hearing various stories about his family's journey from Eastern Europe to Nicaragua, where he grew up, and to the U.S., and he traces those stories in his latest work, Travel Guide to Nicaragua. The work will be premiered next week at Philadelphia's Congregation Rodeph Shalom and Carnegie Hall in New York by Philadelphia's The Crossing choir, and A Tempo host Rachel Katz this week chats with Gordon and The Crossing co-founder and conductor Donald Nally about the work. The program also features the second part of Rachel's conversation with Michael Shapiro about his work, Voices, based on poetry by Sephardic Jews during the Holocaust.
