Prize Brings Opera Librettists into the Spotlight

Librettist and playwright Deborah Brevoort, who won this year's Campbell Opera Librettist Prize

A Tempo this past week (8/26) featured an interview about an award that underscores the role of librettists in the creation of an opera.

The artists who craft the words that bring an opera alive have often not received the same level of recognition as their composer counterparts, but an award established in 2020 by librettist/lyricist Mark Campbell and Opera America is working to change that. Earlier this summer, librettist and playwright Deborah Brevoort became the third recipient of the Campbell Opera Librettist Prize, and A Tempo host Rachel Katz this week chatted with Brevoort, Campbell and Opera America President and CEO Marc Scorca about the prize and the important role that the librettist plays in creating an opera.

Rachel Katz is the host of A Tempo which airs Saturdays at 7 pm.
