Caprices and Capriccios

Longtime Between the Keys host Jed Distler rings in 2023 with Episode 393, devoted to Caprices and Capriccios for piano. "One thinks of the word 'caprice' as a jest, or a whim, or something light. But that’s not always the case," says Jed. "Many caprices or capriccios are such in name only. Still, the subject provided a great starting point to assemble a playlist of piano works that I know you’ll enjoy."

Featured composers include Mozart, Bartok, Dora Pejačević, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Ligeti, Julius Isserlis, Nikos Skalkattos, Mendelssohn, Lourie, Stravinsky, Alkan, Martinu, James P. Johnson and J.S. Bach. You will hear pianists Walter Gieseking, Florent Boffard, Rosalyn Tureck, Paul Crossley, Giorgio Koukl, Thomas Günther, Vincenzo Maltempo, Nikolaos Samaltanos, Sam Haywood, Paul Lewis, Peter Donohoe, Ekaterina Litvintseva, Bruce Hungerford and Jed's revered mentor Dick Hyman.

Tune in this Tuesday night at ten, with a rebroadcast Wednesday at noon, exclusively on The Classical Network and WWFM.org.
