Preludes from A to Z

Back in Between the Keys’ first season, the program's creator, producer and host Jed Distler created an episode featuring 26 short pieces, each by a composer whose last name began with a different letter in the alphabet. He programmed them in alphabetical order by composer.

This week Jed gives himself the task of coming up with 26 preludes by 26 different composers, with the aim of moving alphabetically from A to Z.

"It was a crazy idea," Jed says, "and, believe me, it wasn't easy."

Indeed, Jed had to cheat in a few instances.

"For example, composers whose last names begin with 'Q' and 'X' didn’t have piano pieces called 'Prelude,' but they are prelude-like. As for 'Y', I looked everywhere, but the best I could do was to come up with a violin Prelude by Ysaye. Still, I think it's an interesting program, and I hope you'll like it."

Join Jed Distler on Between the Keys for " Preludes from A to Z," starting with Lera Auerbach and ending with Judith Lang Zaimont. But who are all the composers in between? To find out, tune in in Tuesday night at 10 and Wednesday at noon, exclusively on The Classical Network.
