For this week's edition of the ASCAP Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award winning Between the Keys, The Classical Network's Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler explores memorable singer/pianist collaborations.
"The art of song is a two way street between singer and pianist," says Jed. "And when a singer and a pianist are really tuned in to one another, magic can happen. I know that for a fact, because when I was young I made much of my living collaborating with singers in both the concert and cabaret worlds.
Among the singer/pianist teams featured will be Jessye Norman/Ann Schein, Regina Resnik/Richard Woitach, Susan Narucki/Donald Berman, Jeanne Lee/Ran Blake, John Kelly/David Del Tredici, Bethany Beardslee/Robert Helps, June Christy/Stan Kenton and Jed Distler himself in a number of settings. The late composer Ned Rorem is also featured, accompanying various singers in his original songs.
