This week's episode of the ASCAP Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys hosted by Jed Distler is devoted to selections from Franz Liszt's solo piano transcriptions of Beethoven's orchestral and chamber works.
Liszt knew how to make the piano sound like an orchestra, leaving few details unaccounted for, yet always keeping his formidable piano writing idiomatic and playable, at least for great virtuosos. We'll hear pianists Gabriele Baldocci, Leslie Howard, Cyprien Katsaris and Maurizio Baglini rise to the Beethoven/Liszt challenge in movements from the Septet and Symphonies Nos. 1, 4 and 9.
