The Dress Circle: Hollywood's Dubbers Part 2

Our dubbers this week include Betty Wand who lent her voice to Rita Moreno and Esther Williams and Marni Nixon who did the singing for Audrey Hepburn, Deborah Kerr, and Natalie Wood. Cyd Charisse was voiced by several singers, this time we have Carol Richards who sang her songs in "Silk Stockings." Among out other dubbers is Martha Mears who is making a return as the voice of Rita Hayworth.

Hollywood’s dubbers or ghost singers are featured once again on this week’s Dress Circle (8/21 7:00 p.m.) in our second look at these often overlooked performers.

Once again, we’ll be featuring Esther Williams, but this time her voice is supplied by Betty Wand who also dubbed Rita Moreno in “West Side Story.”

Carol Richards was the voice for Cyd Charisse in “Silk Stockings,” and we’ll not only be featuring her, but we’ll be bringing back Martha Mears who sang for Rita Hayworth in several films.

The central focus of this installment of our dubbers are the incredible talents of Marni Nixon. Herself dubbed “The Ghostess with the Mostest,” we’ll be featuring Nixon as the voice of three stars. The films we’ve chosen include “My Fair Lady” where she sang for Audrey Hepburn (unbeknownst to Hepburn), “The King and I” giving voice to the songs for Deborah Kerr (and Kerr went against the studio, praising Nixon for her work on the film), and finally, “West Side Story” where she sang for Natalie Wood (much to the surprise of Wood.)

There will be a few more, but you’ll just have to tune in to find out who they are!

Please join us for more excellent singing, and we hope that you’ll have as much fun as we’ve been having as we remember some fabulous performers who were generally behind the scenes.
