The Dress Circle: Songs from the Shows of March 2023

We’re looking at 123 years of Broadway musical history on this week’s Dress Circle (3/5 7:00 p.m.) as we sample songs from some of the shows that opened in New York in March.

We’re beginning with a revival from 1900 of Michael Balfe’s “The Bohemian Girl” which originally opened in 1844 and would be revived on Broadway fifteen times! From there, we’re jumping to this March and the opening of another revival, Jason Robert Brown’s “Parade” which opened in 1998 and won Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Musical Score but lost Best Musical to “Fosse.” We don’t have a recording from the 2023 cast which stars Ben Platt as Leo Frank, the Jewish man who was falsely accused of a murder and lynched in Georgia in 1915, so we’re returning to the original cast for our sample of this engrossing show.

As always, the rest of our playlist includes songs from well-known shows such as “Brigadoon,” “Les Miserables,” “Funny Girl,” “Gypsy,” “The King and I,’ and “Cabaret.” However, we’ll also sample pieces from less familiar or forgotten musicals including “Mr. Wonderful,” “Purlie,” “Bubbling Brown Sugar,” and “Irene.”

Join us as we celebrate some of the openings for March, the month of weeping willows and daffodils with another hour of some wonderful performances.
