The Dress Circle: Songs from the Shows of May

May greetings! To celebrate the month of the willow and hawthorn trees, emeralds, and lilies of the valley, we’ll be looking at 13 Broadway openings occurring in May on this week’s Dress Circle (5/7 7:00 p.m.).

We broke with our recent tradition for May and don’t have an early and recent opening mainly because the most recent opening happened in 2016! Shows need to be open in enough time for Tony nominations, and with those coming at the beginning of May, those nominations are nearly impossible to garner.

With that said, we do have another lovely variety of songs from shows that weren’t on last year’s salute to May.

We have a few revivals in Coleman and Frelds’ “Sweet Charity” and “110 in the Shade.”

Kander and Ebb are represented this year through two shows, “Flora the Red Menace” and “Kiss of the Spider Woman.”

There will also be some highly recognizable favorites with songs from the Gershwin compilation musical “My One and Only,” Berlin’s “Annie Get Your Gun” (although the song from this show may not be familiar because it’s no longer a part of the show and didn’t make the film), and “Damn Yankees” by Adler and Ross.

Some of the forgotten shows include “New Faces of 1952,” “A Day in Hollywood; a Night in Ukraine,” and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Me and Juliet.”

There’s more, but once again, you’ll just have to tune in to see what they are. Thank you again for making us a part of your musical world and helping us to reach 40 years as volunteer hosts of the program!
