It’s a celebration of the music of a composer whose name you probably won’t know but whose music you definitely will on this week’s Dress Circle (6/30 7:00 p.m.) as we look at a small portion of the catalogue of Paul J. Smith.
Smith spent most of his career writing or orchestrating the scores for films that came out of the Disney Studios. Penning the scores (not songs) for over 55 animated films and 25 live action works, he helped to give many of us some of our favorite childhood (and adult) memories.
We’ve chosen six of the films on which he worked to showcase the talents of this musician who came from a wonderfully musical family from Calumet, Michigan.
The three animated features include “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” “Pinocchio” for which he won an Academy Award, and “Cinderella.”
You’ll also hear music from three of his live action works that include the popular “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,” the nature film “Secrets of Life,” and a favorite of many, “Pollyanna.”
You may hear a snippet of a song here and there during the hour, but most of the music comes from these evocative soundtracks that will surely bring back some fond memories.
