Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman were an integral part of the Walt Disney family where they were known simply as “The Boys.” Most people will recognize some of their songs like “It’s a Small World” and “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” but on this week’s Dress Circle (1/19 7:00 p.m.), we’re going to be looking at some of their songs from stage and screen with which listeners might not be familiar or know that they wrote them.
The Sherman brothers are said to have written more songs and film scores than any other composing team in film history, so it was easy to find some unfamiliar material. These songs, coupled with songs from three of their stage outings, have given us more than enough material to fill an interesting playlist.
The three stage musicals we’ve looked to include “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” which included additional material not found in the film musical. We’ve also turned to a World War II musical that featured the remaining two Andrews Sisters (Maxine and Patty) called “Over Here!” and a musical that never quite made it to Broadway but was produced as a gala concert for the York Theatre Co. titled “Busker Alley.”
The rest of the songs we’re featuring come from a variety of film and television productions and include vocals by Leslie Ann Warren, Maurice Chevalier, Hayley Mills, Burl Ives, Tommy Steel, and Paul Frees Just to name a few.
Join us for a bit of fun and a wide variety of songs from a pair of brothers who didn’t always get along but were still able to make some wonderfully memorable songs.
