WWFM Sunday Opera with Michael Kownacky

The Sunday Opera: Saint-Saens' "Samson et Dalila" from London's Royal Opera

The opera that features everyone’s favorite bacchanale is being featured on this week’s Sunday Opera (8/14 3:00 p.m.). Camille Saint-Saens’ “Samson et Dalila” is a prime example of a doomed love that doesn’t blossom until after the heroine has incapacitated the hero with the most famous haircut in history, but there is that great bacchanale!

Seokjonk Baek sings the title role in this production with Elina Garanca as the priestess of Dagon whose bent on revenge, Dalila. Lukasz Golinski takes the role of the High Priest of Dagon and Blaise Malaba is Abimelech. Other members of the cast include Alan Pingarron, Chuma Sljeqa, Thando Mjandana, and Goderdzi Janelidze. Antonio Pappano leads the Chorus and Orchestra of The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

We’ll turn from one doomed love to another after the opera when Michael Kownacky will be bringing you the score of a ballet adaptation of Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights” by Claude-Michel Schonberg. John Pryce-Jones conducts the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra in this lovely work by the composer who is best known for his work for the stage musicals “Les Miserables” and “Miss Saigon.”

Michael is program host and host of the WWFM Sunday Opera, Sundays at 3 pm, and co-host of The Dress Circle, Sundays at 7 pm.
