Composer/pianists on Between the Keys, July 10th

The Classical Network's Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler has a special affection for his fellow composer/pianists, and has frequently showcased them on his weekly ASCAP Deems Taylor Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys, sponsored by Steinway and Sons.

"I don't think people completely appreciate the composer/pianist tradition's extraordinary impact on the history of music," Distler says. "Think of Beethoven playing his own concertos and wowing his audiences with improvisations, or Franz Liszt driving his public mad, or, by contrast, the austere yet earth-shattering Rachmaninov. This tradition thrives in a big way today, but you have to look for composer/pianists. They're not superstars anymore, except in pop music."

For this week's episode, Distler brings together a wide variety of composers at the piano in recordings that span from the late 1920s until today, including such disparate luminaries as David Macbride, Sergei Rachmaninov, Jessica Krash, Percy Grainger, Nathan Currier, Anthony Newman, Edward Elgar, Haskell Small, Dana Suesse and Nikolai Kapustin.

Listen to Between the Keys this Tuesday, July 10th at 10 PM.
