We’re celebrating a New Year’s tradition on this week’s Sunday Opera (12/29 3:00 p.m.) with Johann Strauss’ comic romp, “Die Fledermaus.” The wonderful cast includes Waldemar Kmentt as Alfred, Hilde Gueden as Rosalinde, Regina Resnik as Prince Orlofsky, Erika Koth as Adele, Walter Berry as Eisenstein, and Eberhard Wachter as Falke with Herbert von Karajan conducting. Some of the guests at Orlofsky’s ball include Renata Tebladi, Mario Del Monaco, Joan Sutherland, Jussi Bjorling, and an inspired duet by Giulietta Simionato and Ettore Bastianini.
We’ll be finishing off the afternoon with another New Year’s tradition: waltz music by some of the best including Josef and Eduard Strauss, Josef Lanner, Oscar Strauss, and Franz Lehar among others.
