On Episode 296 of the ASCAP Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys, The Classical Network’s Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler invites listeners on a cinematic musical tour with the piano in tow.
“One could devote dozens of programs to the piano in the movies,” says Distler. “However, I thought we could explore the topic from different angles. You’ve got the famous ‘Warsaw Concerto’ as a template for works with piano and orchestra specifically created for films. Then you’ve got virtuoso paraphrases on popular movie tunes, just as Liszt did with opera. Then there are classical works that become famous when incorporated in movie soundtracks. So we’ll cover all of our bases. The mood will be mostly light hearted, although there are a few dark, brooding selections for contrast.”
Richard Rodgers, Nino Rota, Alex North, Bernard Herrmann, Richard Addinsell and Philip Glass are among the featured composers this hour.
Tune in Tuesday February 23rd at 10 PM for Between the Keys, with a rebroadcast Wednesday February 24th at noon, exclusively on The Classical Network and WWFM.org.
