On this week’s episode of the ASCAP Deems Taylor Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys, the Classical Network’s Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler takes listeners on a musical journey that ranged from Frescobaldi and Nielsen to Betsy Jolas, Percy Grainger, Grieg, Massenet, Mussorgsky and Chopin.
“Although there are several suites of works featured on this episode,” explains Distler, “there’s not really and underlying theme. Yet when putting my play list together, I aimed for finding selections that sounded fresh and caught my immediate attention. The Verdehr Trio’s subtle Grieg arrangements, for example, or Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov and the hackneyed Meditations from Massenet’s Thais in a classy solo piano arrangement. And what about Philippe Entremont’s thoughtful interpretation of Chopin’s Third Ballade? No one every talks about that when discussing this work’s recordings.”
Tune in this Tuesday night August 24th at 10 with a rebroadcast Wednesday August 25th at noon on Between the Keys, an exclusive production of The Classical Network and WWFM.org.
