Medieval pilgrimages were undertaken for many reasons: As penance to fulfill a promise made during illness, to escape prison, or, as Geoffrey Chaucer suggests, simply as a cure for Spring fever. Pilgrimage sites were often places where miracles had occured or sacred relics were discovered.
