This week’s episode of the ASCAP Deems Taylor Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys celebrates the centenary of Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli (1920-1995), who would have turned 100 on January 5th. The Classical Network’s Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler has put together a wide-ranging program showcasing the legendary and enigmatic Italian pianist’s legacy.
“Michelangeli cancelled more concerts than he played, and focused his energies on perfecting a relatively small public repertoire,” Distler explains. “Yet, as the saying goes, there’s value in scarcity, and Michelangeli’s best recordings belong in any serious piano library. Has there ever been a more ravishing Debussy ‘Reflets dans l’eau,’ or so rarified a performance of Ravel’s G Major Concerto as Michelangeli’s 1957 studio version, or a more blazing live Grieg Concerto?”
Tune in this Tuesday at 10:00 PM for Between the Keys, an exclusive production of The Classical Network and WWFM.org.
