As David McCormick began researching music at Monticello, he came across information on Eston Hemings, one of Thomas Jefferson's sons with his slave Sally Hemings, who became an accomplished fiddler and led a band of Black fiddlers. The discovery prompted McCormick to explore the role of Black musicians at Monticello further and launch the Early Music Access Project to expand understandings of and access to Early Music in the Charlottesville, Va. region, and this Saturday on A Tempo, host Rachel Katz speaks with McCormick about these programs.
The conversation also includes a discussion of efforts to promote diversity and inclusion by Early Music America, where McCormick was recently named Executive Director.
