Tone, Tone & Tone

"Are you going to seduce me with your tone?"

That's how piano legend Earl Wild humorously greeted one of his students at a lesson. The remark may have been made in half-jest, yet tone is one of the piano world's big topics.

"Keyboard mavens often obsess over pianists who make beautiful sounds, who have sonorities that one could easily describe as round, warm, ringing, singing, and so forth," says The Classical Network's Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler, who has produced, written and hosted the ASCAP Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys since it first launched in March 2015.

The proverbial "tone beautiful" links all of the pianists featured on this week's episode. We'll hear performances by Youra Guller, Artur Schnabel, Mark Anderson, Maryla Jonas, Vassily Primakov, Claudio Arrau, Arcadi Volodos, Shura Cherkassky, Solom and Jean-Efflam Bavouzet.

Tune in Tuesday night at 10, with a rebroadcast Wednesday at noon, exclusively on The Classical Network and WWFM.org.
