We’ll continue with the music of Handel and the performance of Music of the Baroque on this week’s Sunday Opera (10/27 3:00 p.m.) with Handel’s 1739 oratorio “Israel in Egypt” which begins after the death of Joseph (of Technicolor Dreamcoat fame) through the seven plagues of Egypt to the liberation of the Israelites. The soloists include Sarah Garthore, Kimberly McCord, Amy Conn, Joseph Schlesinger, Daniel Shirley, Klaus Georg, Keven Keys, and Todd von Felker. Once again, Jane Glover conducts the Music of the Baroque Orchestra and Chorus.
Stay tuned after the opera when host Michael Kownacky will stay with the Egyptian/Biblical theme with Richard Strauss’ ballet “Josephs Legende” about Joseph (of Technicolor Dreamcoat fame) and his trials with Potiphar’s wife. We’ll also hear Georges Bizet’s forgotten one-act opera “Djamileh” which takes place in ancient Egypt, and for a bit of fun, Albert Ketelbey’s “In the Mystic Land of Egypt.”
