The Classical Network’s Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler devotes this week’s edition of the ASCAP Deems Taylor Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys to the art of musical portraiture.

“The idea of writing musical portraits has long held appeal for composers,” says Distler. “Some are portraits of cities, others are basically tributes, and there are portraits composed from life, such as the more than 150 by Virgil Thomson. Whether or not the music resembles the portrait subject is another matter, yet I think that portraiture still makes for an interesting show topic.”

Tune in to Between the Keys Tuesday night August 27th at 10 for musical portraits by François Couperin, William Alwyn, Robert Schumann, Allen Shawn, Roger Tréfousse, Judith Lang Zaimont, Jack Beaver, and, of course, Virgil Thomson.
