The Classical Network’s Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler devotes this week’s episode of Between the Keys (Episode No. 224) to the artistry of Grigori Sokolov, one of today’s most revered and enigmatic artists.

“Sokolov is celebrated for his unique sonority, intense focus, and incredible specificity of detail,” says Distler, “But he’s got an enigmatic side too. For example, Sokolov famously (or infamously) refuses to record, and won’t play in the United States anymore. Yet somehow live performance recordings float around, and piano mavens eagerly await them, just as Deadheads used to swap live Grateful Dead tapes. Not that Sokolov is the Grateful Dead of classical pianists!. Maybe the Rolls-Royce? Who knows?"

Tune in Tuesday at 10 PM to the ASCAP Deems Taylor Virgil Thomson Award winning show Between the Keys only here on The Classical Network and WWFM.Org.
