On Friday August 28th from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM, The Classical Network's Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler hosts a special two-hour program celebrating the centenary and artistry of conductor Guido Cantelli, who was born April 27th 1920.

After hearing Cantelli rehearsing with the La Scala Orchestra in 1948, Arturo Toscanini invited the young conductor to make his American debut with the Maestro's NBC Symphony Orchestra, which quickly paved the way towards an international career. Cantelli shared Toscanini's perfectionism and honest musicianship, although he was very much his own artist. Tragically, Cantelli perished in a plane crash on November 23rd 1956 , yet his surviving commercial recordings and broadcast performances testify to his remarkable gifts.

Distler has selected a wide representation of Cantelli's eclectic repertoire, with works by Stravinsky, Verdi, Ravel, Tchaikovsky, Paul Creston, Rossini, Debussy, Vivaldi and Beethoven.
