The Dress Circle: Songs from the Shows of January

We’re hoping for a happy New Year, and we’re welcoming in 2023 on this week’s Dress Circle (1/1 7:00 p.m.) with songs from some of the shows that opened in New York, covering a span of 128 years.

Our Oldest show comes from 1887, ran for a miraculous 155 performances, and appeared in New York 9 more times! The show is called “The Old Homestead,” and although it was primarily a play, it did contain several songs that appeared in various church scenes. We’ll hear one of those pieces, “The Old Oaken Bucket,” in a recording made during one of its revivals in 1905.

The most recent opening was actually the last musical to open on Broadway in January. Jason Robert Brown’s “Honeymoon in Vegas,” based on the film, appeared in 2015 and ran for 93 performances.

Once again, we’ve planned a program featuring music from well-known shows such as “Sweet Charity,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Oliver,” and “Hello, Dolly!” The lesser-known, or forgotten shows, include “Street Scene,” “Darling of the Day,” “The Grand Tour,” and “Shenandoah.”

All in all, we’ve got a baker’s dozen of excellent performances to ring in the New Year, and we hope you’ll join us this week.
