The Dress Circle: Songs from the Shows of June

Your browser doesn’t support HTML5 audio

Even though June is not known for being a month of many Broadway musical openings, we’ve still managed to put together a varied menu of songs encompassing 95 years of musical history on this week’s Dress Circle (6/6 7:00 p.m.).   The earliest show this week is an installment of “The Ziegfeld Follies” from 1919 which featured songs by Irving Berlin.   As a treat, we have one of the original stars, Eddie Cantor, performing one of his hit songs from the show.   Our most recent recording comes from 2011 and the legendary (for all of the wrong reasons) “Spider-Man – Turn Off the Dark” with music and lyrics by Bono and The Edge.   Some of the other shows we’ve selected this time include “The Vagabond King,” the gospel musical “Your Arms Too Short to Box with God,” “Grease,” “Seventeen” which was based on stories by Booth Tarkington, “Chicago,” and “I’m Getting My Act Together and Taking It on the Road.”

Of course we’ll feature Carmen Miranda’s yearly turn from “The Streets of Paris,” but we’ll also hear from Lee Wiley who will perform the Rodgers and Hart hit “Manhattan” which originated in “The Garrick Gaieties of 1925” and several others.

Join us for a happy evening of Song from some interesting shows.
