JazzOn2's Piano Excursions with Jed Distler/January 14th and 17th
The Classical Network's Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler shares his passion for jazz piano on the second Sunday and Wednesday of each month with his program Piano Excursions, two hours of music embracing jazz piano's wide stylistic range.
On this month's program, Distler compares various solo pianists interpreting the same song, and how each one sheds individual light on common material. We'll hear Dave Brubeck perform his composition In Your Own Sweet Way, as well as versions by Tommy Flanagan, Alan Farnham, Jaki Byard and Bill Evans. James P. Johnson's stride piano "test piece" Carolina Shout is heard in two versions with the composer at the keyboard, plus two with his protégé Fats Waller. In turn, both Jelly Roll Morton and Keith Jarrett prove unlikely bedfellows with Waller's classic Ain't Misbehavin'.
No less than three recordings of Harold Arlen's standard Get Happy are served up by the legendary Art Tatum, while we compare Oscar Peterson's 1969 and 1981 recordings of Body and Soul back to back.
Listen to Piano Excursions via JazzOn2.org, on Sunday January 14th from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM, with a rebroadcast Wednesday January 17th from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
