This unfortunately common behavior, sometimes called medical gaslighting, leaves patients — especially women — feeling dismissed. And it can cause them to minimize or ignore what may be very real, painful, and even dangerous symptoms. We
continue our Genias in Music series, remembering notable Latina women
and their contributions throughout history. This week we examine the
legacy of La Lupe, the legendary Cuban singer known as the queen of
latin soul. We question some of the myths that attempted to delegitimize
her music and look at how her identity as an Afrolatina influenced the
racist and sexist characterizations of her. But by singing and moving in
the ways she was known for, she was resisting her erasure and claiming
her space –– whether audiences understood it or not.
Also on the show… Dahlma Llanos Figueroa takes us on her journey from public school teacher and librarian to novelist.
