Between the Keys asks “Where’s the Orchestra?” on September 8th and 9th

Episode No. 272 of the ASCAP Deems Taylor Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys finds The Classical Network’s Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler answering the musical question: “Where’s the Orchestra?”

“Piano transcriptions of orchestral and choral works were necessary before radio and recordings were invented, back when the piano was your home entertainment center,” explains Distler. “Although transcriptions were out of fashion for most of the 20th century, they’re more popular than ever before, probably because we’ve got more pianists who can actually play these difficult suckers!”

Selections will include works by Carl Orff, Richard Strauss, Gabriel Fauré, Bedrich Smetana, Claude Debussy and Bela Bartok, respectively performed by Eric Chumachenco, Francesco Libetta, Emile Naoumoff, Framçois-Xavier Poizat, Mark Hambourg and Gyorgy Sandor

Listen to Between the Keys on Tuesday September 8th  at 10 P M, with a rebroadcast Wednesday September 9th at 12 Noon, only here on The Classical Network and WWFM.org
