A Tempo: Programs Develop the Next Generation of Musicians and Composers

Four composers were selected for this year's New Jersey Symphony Edward T. Cone Composition Institute (from left): Jack Frerer, Baldwin Giang, Sophia Jani and Dai Wei.

In this special one-hour episode, Tempo this Saturday (7/30) checks in on two programs this summer in Central New Jersey designed to provide training and experience for young musicians and composers: The Mercer County Community College Summer Jazz Institute and the New Jersey Symphony Edward T. Cone Composition Institute.

The New Jersey Symphony Edward T. Cone Composition Institute returned to Princeton this year, bringing together four young composers to work on their original compositions with the orchestra. The week provided the opportunity to rehearse, perform and receive feedback from the musicians, conductor David Robertson and Composer Steven Mackey, director of the institute. A Tempo host Rachel Katz hosts a roundtable discussion with the young composers - Dai Wei, Sophia Jani, Baldwin Giang and Jack Frerer - about their works and their experience during the week, and with Mackey.

This week's show also includes a conversation about the Mercer County Community College Jazz Institute with Scott Hornick, coordinator of Music and Entertainment Technology at the college. The program wraps up Friday, August 5 with a concert on the MCCC Quad at 6 pm.
