Chant Traditions Find Place in Contemporary Music

A Tempo this Saturday (12/2 at 7 pm) looks ahead to an upcoming program of contemporary piano music based on traditional Byzantine and Jewish chants.

With the holiday season underway, with its musical traditions such as productions of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker and Handel’s Messiah, A Tempo this week puts the focus on another traditional musical form - the chant. Host Rachel Katz will speak with composer Victoria Bond and pianist and Greek Orthodox chanter Paul Barnes about their upcoming concert at Manhattan’s St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church that will feature contemporary music based on traditional Byzantine and Jewish chants.

Rachel Katz is the host of A Tempo which airs Saturdays at 7 pm.
